 About REACH

REACH is the abbreviation used for the EU regulation (REACH Chemicals Directive 1907/2006) concerning the “‘Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals’. It is a massive piece of legislation that as a regulation applies automatically to all 27 EU member states as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein (but not Switzerland).  Following Brexit, the UK has implemented a carbon copy of the EU regulation (known as UK REACH), which will phase in from the start of 2021 and be completely implemented within 6 years, although this may be delayed.

Ethanol latest news

In December 2022, ECHA issued a draft compliance check decision requesting a long term toxicity test on fish.  Fish are vertebrate species and, as such this would constitute a new animal test on ethanol, with possible repercussions for downstream users with a policy not to use substances tested on animals.

For more information on how industry responded and the status of the issue, please refer to the Ethanol REACH Association.

CLP regulation updated to include new end points

In December 2022  the EU Commission published the final delegated act for the addition of new hazard classes to the classification, labelling and packaging regulation for the new end points of endocrine disruptors and PBT/vPvB-PMT/vPvM substances and mixtures containing them.  If there are no objections from EU Council and Parliament the delegated act will enter into force approximately 2 months from the publication date.

The changes deviate from the GHS system for classification and labelling and will not apply in the UK.
